Abstract

INTRODUCTION. It is crucial to invest in the development of professional competencies with a comprehensive approach, not only to benefit the nursing staff, but also to optimize the quality of care provided. OBJECTIVE. To determine the relationship between oncologic competencies, management skills and satisfaction in nurses working in a specialized institution. METHODOLOGY. Quantitative approach, cross-sectional and correlational predictive type. With a sample of 309 nursing professionals working in the oncology area, 3 instruments using a Likert scale were administered, assessing oncological competencies, management skills and satisfaction The instruments were validated using Cronbach's alpha with a reliability of 0.98, 0.97 and 0.96, respectively. RESULTS. The majority of nursing professionals displayed medium and low levels in oncologic competencies and management skills. Satisfaction was high. Correlation analysis showed measures of association for variables with scores that did not fit a normal distribution; the values of 0.704, 0.475, 0.568 indicated a high and moderate but significant positive correlation (p > 0.01). In addition, multiple linear regression analysis showed that oncologic competencies and management skills accounted for 47.10% of the total variance in satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS. Training in oncologic competencies and management skills should be implemented to improve the quality of the services provided, which also improves benefits and satisfaction. The development of oncological competencies and skills acquired by nurses are not related to satisfaction, which is more limited by factors such as job stability, economic income, and lack of human resources and supplies.
