Abstract

Introduction: For the adequate control of arterial hypertension it is necessary that patients adhere to the recommendations on compliance with antihypertensive treatment and modification of their lifestyles. Objective to determine the relationship between lifestyle and adherence to antihypertensive treatment. Methodology: Cross-sectional correlational study. The population that constitutes the sample is 150 users in the La Era-Lima, Peru population and 100 users from San Miguel-Arica, Chile, chosen through non-probability sam-pling, meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The in-struments were the Lifestyle Profile questionnaire (PEPS-I) and the Morisky-Green scale. The study was carried out in compliance with the concepts of research ethics. The data analysis was with descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: 61.6% of the men were not adherent to the antihypertensive treatment, 53.8% of the women were adherent. The average age in both the adherent and non-adherent groups ranged between 71 and 74 years. The Chi-square test shows that sex (p = 0.015) and lifestyle (p = 0.000) are significantly related to adherence to antihy-pertensive treatment. Conclusions: Most of the hypertensive population of the study have a regular lifestyle. The female sex and those who live in a couple relationship proved to be more adherent to antihypertensive treatment. In the analysis of the re-lationship of variables, the only ones that had a significant relationship with adherence to antihypertensive treatment were the variables sex and lifestyle.
