N2 - Purpose This study aims to evaluate the difference in research competencies of professors in public and private institutions in Peru and its impact on their research publications. Design / Methodology This study employed a quantitative and comparative-descriptive approach. This survey included 640 university professors from 10 public and private institutions. Utilizing the research competencies evaluation scale. The research employed both SPSS and Smart PLS for data analysis and conclusion drawing. To obtain the primary data, a cross-sectional research approach was utilized. In addition, structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to examine the influence of competencies on research publication output. Findings The study shows that academics at public universities have superior research skills. In addition, this study revealed that research competencies are limited, as most educators lack the necessary background knowledge, training, and mindset to employ research methodologies and approaches systematically. There is a distinction between the research abilities of academics at Peruvian public and private universities. However, competencies have a substantial impact on research papers at both public and private universities. Practical Implications The study's findings are useful for enhancing the research quality of professors at Peruvian private universities for their publications and literary contributions. Originality / Value This study is based on a novel concept that has not been critically examined in previous research. This study contributes significantly to the body of knowledge.
