    Introduction To achieve quality education, it is essential to incorporate the cognitive dimension while also integrating socioemotional development. This study aims to examine the relationship between academic motivation and academic engagement, and to assess the mediating role of academic self-efficacy among Peruvian university students. Methods A quantitative, explanatory, and cross-sectional research design was utilized. The study sample comprised 675 students from five private universities in Peru, selected through convenience sampling. Data analyses were performed using bias-corrected bootstrap procedures with 5,000 samples for mediation analysis. Results Mediation analysis revealed a significant total effect of motivation on engagement ( β = 0.488, p < .001). Notably, the indirect effect mediated by academic self-efficacy was also significant ( β = 0.158, p < .001), accounting for 32.5% of the total effect. Conclusion The research findings reveal that motivation plays a pivotal role in influencing academic engagement. However, for this influence to translate into sustained academic engagement, it is essential to bolster self-efficacy. Institutional interventions, such as mentoring and active learning, are critical in enhancing students' confidence, thereby contributing to improved academic success and retention.

    Background In contemporary academia, proficiency in a second language, particularly English, is of significant importance for university students. The objective of this research is to determine the validity and reliability properties of the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) among Peruvian university students. Methods Six hundred ten Peruvian university students, aged between 18 and 50 years ( M = 22.8; SD = 5.90), participated in the study. Statistical techniques for latent variables were employed, and recommendations for determining the psychometric properties of educational and psychological tests were followed. Results The results show that the SILL exhibits an internal structure organized into six first-order factors and one second-order factor, consistent with the theoretical proposal. This structure was confirmed through CFA with excellent goodness-of-fit indices (χ 2 = 222.254, df = 129, p = 0.000, RMSEA = 0.034, SRMR = 0.037, CFI = 0.971, TLI = 0.966). The inventory also demonstrates adequate internal consistency for its six factors, as well as for the complete inventory ( α / ω /H > 0.7), and is invariant according with gender (male and female), geographical location (coast, mountains and jungle) age (late adolescence and early adulthood), and English educational level (A and B). Concussion It’s concluded that the SILL is a measurement instrument that demonstrates validity, factorial invariance, and high reliability in its scores. Consequently, it can be utilized in future academic research.

    Background: Vegetarianism is commonly associated with various health benefits. However, the association between this dietary regimen and aspects of mental health remains ambiguous. This study compared the symptoms of depression and anxiety, emotional eating (EmE), and body mass index (BMI) in Peruvian vegetarian and non-vegetarian adults. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 768 Peruvian adults, of whom 284 (37%) were vegetarians and 484 (63%) were non-vegetarians. The Depression Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2), Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-2 (GAD-2), and an EmE questionnaire were applied; additionally, the BMI was calculated. Simple and multiple linear regression and Poisson regression models with robust variance were used to evaluate the association between depression, anxiety, EmE, and BMI with dietary patterns. Results: The vegetarians (Adjusted Prevalence Ratio [PR] = 0.24, 95% CI 0.16–0.31; p < 0.001) reported more depressive symptoms than the non-vegetarians. This trend persisted for anxiety, with an adjusted PR of 0.17 (95% CI: 0.01–0.29; p = 0.012). However, the vegetarians (adjusted PR = −0.38, 95% CI: −0.61–−0.14; p < 0.001) reported lower EmE scores compared to the non-vegetarians. Likewise, the vegetarians had a lower mean BMI than the non-vegetarians (B = −0.16, 95% CI: −0.21–−0.08; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Vegetarian diets are associated with increased symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as lower EmE and BMI scores. Further longitudinal studies are needed to elucidate these associations and determine causality and the underlying mechanisms involved.

    Effects of depression, anxiety, and stress on reading self-efficacy in Peruvian adolescents
    (2026-03-03)
    Niel Oswaldo Macedo-Muñoz
    ;
    Introduction The process of reading encompasses not only cognitive dimensions but also motivational factors, such as self-efficacy, which are crucial for learning among adolescents. These factors can be influenced by adverse physiological and emotional conditions. Consequently, the objective of this study was to ascertain whether depression, anxiety, and stress are negatively associated with reading self-efficacy in Peruvian adolescents. Method This study employs a quantitative, non-experimental cross-sectional design, utilizing surveys to gather data from 463 adolescent students, aged 12 to 17 years, attending one public and two private schools in Chanchamayo, Junín, Peru. The research instruments include the Abbreviated Scales of Depression, Anxiety, and Stress (DASS-21) and the Self-Efficacy Scale for Reading. Results The findings indicate that women exhibit significantly higher levels of depression ( p < 0.05) and anxiety ( p < 0.01) compared to men. A structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis was performed, demonstrating an excellent fit: χ 2 scaled = 1.18, df = 2, p = 0.553, CFI = 1.000, TLI = 1.006, RMSEA = 0.000 CI 95% [0.000, 0.069], and SRMR = 0.004. This analysis confirms that depression (β = −0.20, p < 0.05) and anxiety (β = −0.23, p < 0.01) are negatively associated with reading self-efficacy, whereas stress (β = 0.03, p = 0.636) is not associated with reading self-efficacy among Peruvian adolescents. The model accounts for 14.5% of the variance in reading self-efficacy. Conclusion Depression and anxiety are negatively associated with reading self-efficacy among Peruvian adolescents. Conversely, there is no empirical evidence to indicate that stress is linked with reading self-efficacy.
